The Personal Ministries department of the British Union Conference held its third Lay Bible Workers' Retreat at the Latimer Hotel in Chesham last weekend, 26 – 28 November. Despite the inclement weather 170 people from around the United Kingdom came together to be inspired to give Bible studies and make contacts and friendships for Jesus Christ.

The tone of the weekend was one of passion, praise and prayer. This atmosphere was created by the three main speakers, Wayne Krause, Andrews Ewoo and Fred Kinsey. Krause, who is extremely passionate about reaching the unchurched, is the Director of Church Planting for the South Pacific Division. In addition to this responsibility, he pastors the Central Coast Community church, a congregation that he planted with a few friends to meet unchurched people. "I believe in practising what you preach," said Wayne, "I can't tell others to do something that I don't do." He emphasised we should be like Jesus Christ who ministered to people where they were.

Andrews Ewoo is a pastor in the Netherlands Union and has served as a Conference President in the Ghana Union Conference for two years as well as the Ministerial Secretary for the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division. Dr Ewoo spoke enthusiastically from the Word of God about living a Godly life. His presentations centred around the concept of 'Who am I'? as a child of God living in a secular world.

Pastor Fred Kinsey is the Speaker/Director for the Voice of Prophecy (USA) and his presentations were delivered with dry wit and humour. His delivered a sermon on the three Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace and made links and references to the fulfilment of prophecy today.

The breakout sessions involved twelve other presenters. These included Pastors Terry Messenger, Aris Vontzalidis, Petras Bahadur, Des Rafferty, Patrick Herbert, Mart de Groot, Jimmy Botha, Des Boldeau and Curtis Murphy. Was the weekend worthwhile? "I want to go out and give more Bible studies. I have been inspired to do this by the presentations I have heard," one attendee said. Another added, "I am currently
developing a website for my unchurched friends and I have been given ideas of what kind of things to put on it."

"It is wonderful to see so many of our lay-members excited about doing evangelism," stated BUC President, Pastor Don McFarlane. "Our purpose as a Church is to fulfil the Gospel Commission and to realise that our members desire to do this, is a blessing."
